test covers

Now that Max's story is done, I plan to do a final edit/polish, beg someone to proof it for me, then make it available on Smashwords. There's been some talk here, on Facebook, and in emails of my doing more with this. Maybe a full-length novel, maybe a pop-up book. While I would love both of those, I doubt I could find a publisher. However, I can imagine putting together a picture book through Lulu or Lightning Source. Another idea is to actually do the book binding myself, with each book being slightly different. I was looking up book binding online, and I think I could manage the thread kind of binding. But once again, a lot of work and probably not enough interest. But anyway, here are some covers I put together to possibly use on Smashwords. Input appreciated! I hope to have someone tweak the cover of choice. All could really use some Photoshop.

  1. I'm holding out for a uterus. I don't think many uteri have graced the covers of books.

  5. jason, I looked for a uterus pic! :D Still thinking about that. A drawing of uterus/fetus would be great.

Heather!! I'll bet I spent 5 hrs looking at ugly kids yesterday! Really!. I don't know how you found those!!!!! Love them all, but especially 1 and 3. Checked the Getty image, and it would cost me $75. :( I'm trying to keep total cost under $50. That includes proofing and possibly formatting. Found out I couldn't afford the artist I really, really wanted to use. Bummed about that.

How do I use a flickr image? Can't figure that out. Email the person? Didn't see anything about usage on her page.

  6. I would email the person and request permission to use the photo.

  7. wondering about a uterus with a fetus holding a stuffed elephant. I'm no artist, so I have to work within my limitations. Maybe I could create a collage and make a jpg of it.

  12. I don't think I know anybody with a baby either. How sad for me!

    Happy to proof, any time.

  13. Thinking about it some more, at the moment I like the number 4 cover. It invokes the final scene, thinking of laying out under the sky and looking up at the stars.

Also, the sky in this picture has a nebulous, womb-y feel to it, and that moon is very cool.

But I am by no means a good judge of what other people will like!

  14. I like the first and third covers, but the third just a little more. The way the clouds are wrapping around is almost uterine. What about that picture you had of the elephant fetus? That would make a good cover.

  15. Hi Beth! I thought about the elephant fetus, but I found it through a google search, and I have no idea of original photographer. I think a lot of people probably used it without permission.
